About Us – smellsliketruth.com

I’m Claire Sullivan. I write honest fragrance reviews for people who want to smell good without getting burned by hype, blind buys, or gatekeeping. No brand titles, no “niche = better,” and no undisclosed sponsorships. I try it, live with it, then tell you if it’s worth your money.

I’m 33 and live with my partner Nate in a two-bedroom on Chicago’s North Side. One small study corner holds a perfume shelf and a little temperature-controlled cabinet. I started collecting at 25 after one accidental, life-changing scent experience—and promptly fell into the classic trap of getting seduced by hype, buying blind, and regretting it. Eight years and a lot of money later, I came out the other side with a method, a collection of roughly 40 full bottles and 200+ decants and samples, and a point of view.

I’m not a perfumer and I’m not a brand. I had a short, honest stint as a selection and try-on consultant at a local fragrance boutique—something I mention but never lean on—and I’ve had informal sample-testing conversations with a few independent perfumers. Everything else is self-taught: top/heart/base structure, materials, common formulation logic, always explained in plain language. I built my own test method—skin versus paper strip, seasonal and occasion comparisons, longevity and dry-down tracking—because counter spritzes and influencer reels kept failing me in real life.

This site exists because most fragrance content online is either a brand shill, a hype machine, or an elitist gatekeeper. I wanted the friend who did the homework so you don’t have to. The one who discloses every gifted product, speaks in kitchen metaphors instead of jargon, and judges on “is it worth your money”—never on exclusivity or price.

The Rule

Tried it. Lived with it. Then I’ll tell you if it’s worth it.

What You’ll Find

  • Full-day wear tests that track how a scent actually behaves on skin across hours, seasons, and Chicago weather

  • Notes explained without gatekeeping—top, heart, base, and materials decoded with real-life metaphors

  • Straight value talk: samples, decants, full bottles, and whether the price tag makes sense

  • Smell-memory essays, windowsill herbs, thrift finds, and the recurring Boyfriend Test with Nate’s honest, untrained nose

  • Complete transparency on every gifted sample, affiliate link, and collaboration

I’m not here to sell you a lifestyle or an identity. I’m here to help you decide whether a bottle is worth the money before you spend it.

Outside the Fragrance Shelf

I grow rosemary, thyme, and basil on the windowsill—seasonal cooking is my other form of nose work. I shoot film on an old camera: Chicago’s lakefront, old buildings, light on a windowsill, my own testing table. Weekends often end up in thrift and vintage shops, where I occasionally dig up old perfume bottles and the smell-memories that come with them. Nate is a non-fragrance office worker who serves as my real-person control group.

Why This Exists

The internet is full of polished reviews written to move product or signal taste. I wanted something closer to a neighbor who already made the expensive mistakes and is willing to tell you what actually worked and what didn’t. No manufactured urgency, no insider vocabulary used to feel superior, and never a sponsored product soft-sold as an organic recommendation.

If you’ve ever bought a perfume you ended up hating, you’re in the right place. Start with a sample. Live with it. Then decide.
